The village’s main community facility is the St. Bride’s Centre, managed by this charity. Currently owned by the Church of Scotland, the Centre is leased to the St. Bride’s Community Group (the lease expires in 2013). The centre comprises a main hall, two meeting rooms, computer suite, community cafe (the Larder) and toilets.

The building itself dates back to 1876 and for many years functioned as the Junior Secondary School in Douglas. For the last 16 years it has been used as a community facility. However, lack of investment has led to a deterioration of the building fabric and to escalating running costs. The problems associated with the building have been confirmed in a recent technical survey.

The St. Bride’s Community Group has recognised that urgent action is required to protect this important community facility. To this end the Group hope to:

- take ownership of the building for the benefit of future generations;

- develop and enhance the building;

- create a multi-functional space including leisure facilities; and

- generate a sustainable level of income from the centre.
